The story revolves around three characters – a grandfather, his grandson and his pet goat and a butcher. They are forced to take hard decisions to fulfill their dreams by the dawn of Diwali.

The story is about politics surrounding land and the plight of farmers. It showed Vijay helping poor farmers in their fight against the industries that have acquired their lands.

Set in a small village in rural Tamil Nadu, Kanne Kalaimane follows the life and times of a rich farmer named Kamala Kannan, and chronicles the changes in this world following the arrival of Bharathi, a newly appointed bank manager in the village.
